Kandy is not just a city. It’s the spiritual and cultural heartbeat of Sri Lanka. Nestled in lush green hills at 500m elevation, Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings before British colonization in 1815. Today it remains the guardian of Sri Lanka’s most sacred relic — the tooth of the Buddha, housed in the magnificent Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) on the shore of Kandy Lake.
Every evening, the temple comes alive with drumming, chanting, and flickering oil lamps during the Pooja ceremony. Every August, the entire city erupts into the Esala Perahera, a 10-night festival of elephants, dancers, fire-breathers, and thousands of devotees in one of Asia’s most spectacular cultural events.
Beyond the temple, Kandy offers the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya (one of the finest in the world), the Kandyan Cultural Dance Show, bustling local markets, and the departure point for the legendary train ride to Ella, rated among the most scenic railway journeys on Earth.
Best for: Culture seekers, spiritual travelers, train enthusiasts, photography lovers.

It is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. 7 hours of rolling tea estates, misty mountains, dramatic bridges, and waterfalls passing your window. We consider it a must-do — not just transport, but a genuine highlight of any Sri Lanka trip.
If your dates align — absolutely yes. It’s one of the most spectacular cultural festivals in Asia. 10 consecutive nights of processions with decorated elephants, traditional dancers, fire-performers, and tens of thousands of devotees. It usually falls in late July / early August. Book early — we’ll secure your spot.
Some are, some aren’t. We only partner with verified ethical sanctuaries where elephants live in semi-freedom, are not ridden, not chained, and are properly cared for. We never send clients to elephant orphanages that allow riding or use chains for photo ops. Ask us — we’re transparent about which ones we recommend and why.
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Asia’s grandest festivals — a 10-day procession of elaborately decorated elephants, traditional dancers, fire performers, and drummers held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It takes place annually in July or August (dates shift with the lunar calendar). If your visit coincides with Perahera, book accommodation well in advance as the city fills up fast.
