Galle

Colonial Charm on the Edge of the Indian Ocean

Walk Through 400 Years of History Inside a Living Fort

Galle isn’t a museum. It’s a living, breathing, 400-year-old fortress city that happens to be one of the most beautiful places in all of Asia.

Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and fortified by the Dutch in the 1600s, Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where colonial-era churches, mosques, and Buddhist temples share narrow streets with trendy cafés, art galleries, boutique hotels, and jewelry shops.

Walk along the rampart walls at sunset and watch cricket matches being played on the grass below while the Indian Ocean stretches endlessly to your right. Get lost in cobblestone lanes where every corner reveals a pastel-colored colonial building covered in bougainvillea.

Outside the fort, Unawatuna Beach offers golden sand and calm turquoise water just 10 minutes away. The Japanese Peace Pagoda sits on a hilltop with panoramic ocean views.

Galle is romance, history, and beauty — all in one compact, walkable package.

Best for: History lovers, couples, photographers, slow travel enthusiasts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Galle

Can I visit Galle Fort as a day trip from Colombo?

Absolutely! With the Southern Expressway, Galle is just 1.5–2 hours from Colombo. We offer a Galle Day Trip that includes pickup from your Colombo hotel, a guided fort tour, lunch, Unawatuna Beach, and return by evening. However, we recommend an overnight stay to fully soak in the atmosphere especially the magical sunset on the ramparts.

Yes! Galle Fort is a living city, not a ticketed attraction. You can walk freely through all the streets, ramparts, and public areas 24/7, completely free. Individual museums and attractions inside may have small entry fees ($2–5).

Unawatuna (5km) is best for calm swimming, snorkeling, and a relaxed beach day, it’s sheltered and family-friendly. Mirissa (35km) is best for surfing, whale watching, and a livelier beach scene with more restaurants and nightlife. Both are incredible. Our recommendation? Visit both!

Very much so. Galle Fort is flat and walkable (stroller-friendly on most streets). Unawatuna Beach has calm, shallow water perfect for kids. The turtle hatchery is a hit with children. And the ice cream shops inside the fort will win over any little traveler.

Don’t miss a sunset walk along the fort ramparts, fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant, and a visit to the sea turtle hatchery on the Galle coast. For food, try local hoppers and kottu at a street stall inside the fort. The boutique cafés along Church Street also serve excellent Sri Lankan brunch and artisan coffee.
